Ali Debra Burton-The LONG Version

She. Is. Here. I NEVER thought the day would come. Our little diva caused quite the chaos in utero, and her entrance into the world pretty much confirmed that she is a stubborn girl who wants what she wants when she wants it! Miss Ali decided she would shorten my cervix, pee A LOT to make my fluid sky high, and make my uterus mad to contract at 26 weeks. They started me on meds right away, but I ended up on bed rest anyway from 30 to 36 weeks. Those 36 weeks were absolutely crazy with fluctuating amniotic fluid levels, pre-term contractions, and lots of cervix thinning out and shortening. Luckily, we made it to 36 weeks and I was taken off bed rest with the ok to have her any time. BUT THEN.....we waited, and waited...and she decided she could hold off after all. I'm telling you...DIVA. So with my real, regular contractions barely dilating me week by week, and my fluid continuing to rise, Dr. Bohman decided to induce at 39 weeks.

This morning, March 27th, we arrived at the hospital at 6 am. It was weird to have it scheduled because yesterday I knew it was my last day with Luke as just his mommy. I knew it was my last day of being pregnant after what seemed like a 2 year pregnancy. And I knew our lives were about to change with another amazing miracle baby sent straight from heaven to our arms. Needless to say, I barely slept last night!

By the time I got changed, got my I.V. started, and got situated I was actually having pretty regular contractions on my own. Dr. showed up around 7 am to break my water. (Usually he would have his nurse do it for him so he could just come when I was complete and ready to push. However, due to my high fluid, there is a chance of a cord prolapse, which is when you have so much fluid that the cord can actually get sucked out first, cutting off oxygen to baby and requiring emergency c-section. Because of that, he wanted to break it himself to try and avoid that!) Baby girl's head was already very low, which caused a very slow trickle of water instead of a gush. We were all expecting Niagra Falls since I had high fluid, (and though it didn't come in gush form, it was Niagra Falls with every single contraction.) It was crazy, but every time I would contract I would leak out everywhere and had to change the bed chucks about 15 times. After breaking my water, they started pitoin. Dr. said this would just ensure that my contractions would be effecive in dilating me. I was 4 cm when I started the pit and when he broke my water. I knew from Luke's delivery that contractions are A LOT worse with pitocin, so I told my nurse Liz (my awesome co-worker) that I would like my epidural as soon as possible. She let me know it would be at least a half hour because the anesthesiologist was in a c-sec. I didn't think anything of it and said that would be fine.

I was wrong!! Not 5 minutes after Liz left the room my contractions hit like a freight train. One minute apart lasting 1 minute 30 seconds. They hurt. They were so much worse than I remembered them to be with Luke. (I got my epi super early with him so maybe that's why.) I was crying through them while panting and squeezing my eyes shut. My mom kept saying she was going to go out and remind them I was there. Haha. Drew just held my hand and fed me ice chips in between. It was hard. And the 30 minute c-section turned into an hour and 15 minutes. But finally around 9:15 the anesthesiologist "remembered I was there." :)

My epidural was also a lot different than Luke's. Maybe because I was contracting so hard while getting it. But the anesthesiologist said to me, "Do you have scoliosis?" I answered "No" right away and got a little worried by that question. He explained that he could see the mark from Luke's epi and it had moved far left from where it should be. Needless to say, he had a rough time getting it in, and the back popping/cramps were pretty painful on top of my contractions. Those few minutes seemed like an eternity. Not to mention the shooting fluid out on my nurse and Drew as they held my hands. Crazy amounts of fluid.

After getting the epidural, things were much better. I was able to rest for about 20 minutes while my mom, Lori, and Drew went to get some lunch. My nurse checked me and I was only a 5 after those crazy contractions for 2 hours. She told me she would be back in 30 minutes to check me again. I kept rolling from side to side to keep my numbness even because it seemed to be stronger whichever way I laid. Then about 20 minutes later, I started feeling a weird pressure in my pelvis whenever I would contract. It started getting pretty intense almost to the point where I felt like I needed to push. I told Drew, Lori and my mom that there was no way that's what I was feeling because I was barely a 5. Liz happened to be delivering another patient at the time, so Drew grabbed another nurse in the hall and told her I felt the need to push. She came in and said she would check me for Liz and just make sure the pressure I was feeling wasn't baby saying it was time. Well, that's exactly what she was saying! It was time! I had gone from a 5 to a 10 and ready to push in 20 minutes. So here's where things got interesting. I work for my Dr., and we have been texting through out my whole pregnancy (things like "Can I take blank for blank, or "My contraction are getting worse, we are going to get checked..." Etc. etc.) So, at this point, I text him to give him a heads up. I said, "Liz is delivering another patient, another nurse checked me and said baby is going to be ready soon!" So, Dr. Bohman get's my text, and immediately calls the hospital asking for whoever checked me. Nobody knew! So he just headed my way assuming I was right. He was a little angry that the nurse didn't call him right away, and I think I made some of the nurses mad by texting him instead of them just calling. But they waited to call him a whole 10 minutes! And let me tell you...I could not have waited another 2, let alone 10. For the next 34 GRUELING minutes, I breathed (more like gasped). through my urges to push with every contraction. I didn't feel pain, which I am very grateful for. But the pressure was so intense that I had to focus on spots on the wall or think about fun memories to keep from pushing. A nurse was there making sure that my contractions wouldn't push her out themselves, but finally Dr. Bohman made it. They quickly set up for him, and after 2 pushes, an episiotomy, and one more big push, our baby was here!

It was a blessing that my epidural was just right enough that I felt the urges to push, or else I probably would have been complete and had her coming without even knowing it. It also made the actual pushing a lot quicker after holding all those pushes in, because my contractions did their duty and moved her down the birth canal themselves. It was incredibly difficult, but the fact that it was so quick made it a little better.

They set her on my chest in all her goopiness glory and I couldn't believe she was finally here. My heart grew twice the size of what it was and I realized there was room for both of my amazing kiddos. They took her away for a little bit to do the quick tests and then brought her back to do skin to skin. 8 lbs, 11 oz, 20.5 inches long and perfect. Such an amazing experience. With Luke, they whisked him away to the nursery right away due to high fever and infection risks, so having Ali with me from birth up until today when we came home was so fun.

She latched on right away, and has been nursing great. My milk isn't in yet, so she isn't getting much but she was doing great and we were able to come home the standard 24 hours after birth. Luke loves her, and calls her "Owie". Cutest thing ever.

I am so grateful for my little family. Drew is my rock and best friend. I couldn't ask for a better partner in parenting and life. We love our sweet girl so much, and can't wait for our future with her. I can already feel the amazing bond with her that I anticipated, and I can already see the relationship between Luke and Ali blossoming. Ali has her daddy wrapped around her finger already, and he complained about her going home outfit because her dress was too short. Uh oh...so it begins. I can't wait. Sorry these are out of order...I'm too tired to fix it right now. ;)

Baby Nursery

This might be a boring post about baby girl's room and the work that went into it. BUT, I'm 37 weeks and 2 days, I got news yesterday that my cervix is no longer dilated and is closed, and my contractions just keep getting worse and worse. Thus, I'm pretty discouraged today. Like I said before, when you go into pre-term labor and the doctors do everything they can to keep you from delivering too early, you kind of make up this scenario in your mind that your baby WILL be early. It's just a matter of how early. Now that my body isn't responding to the contractions like it was at 28-32 weeks, I am kind of upset. Doctor says he will induce me at 39 weeks, but if my cervix is still closed I don't want to induce due to the risk of my cervix not doing it's job and ending in c-section. I know the goal in the end is just to have a healthy baby girl. And it's not far away. But in the mean time, I will do things like blog about pointless subjects in hopes of getting my mind off my tightening uterus. ;)

Crib bedding: Pottery barn. Laundry basket/diaper basket: Ross. Dresser: Re-painted from our bedroom. Rug: Mom-in-law, Lori crocheted. :)

My sis-in-law, Jeri, made that canvas on the left with the lyrics from Coldplay's song, "Yellow." Cute huh!
Chair: Target 2010 (from Luke's baby-hood ;), Lamp: IKEA, Owls: Hobby Lobby. Be You Tiful canvas: From Drew's mom for Christmas to me. (It happened to match baby room!) Framed fabric and mirror: Crafts I made from Hobby Lobby.
I love how everything came together. I had my eye on the lamp from Target long before we even decided on colors for her room or anything. I love it because it doesn't shade the light coming out and keeps her room really bright!
Seriously this wall looks like it was a lot of money to gather all this stuff, but literally cost me less than $20! The black frames were CHEAP from hobby lobby and I just cut fabric to fit. The owls were half off from Hobby Lobby and we spray painted them, easy! The frame was also half off and I added little diamonds. The Canvas was a gift, and the lamp is from IKEA but bought at a yard sale. Score! (This pic below is actually in black and white with the yellow accentuated. Just playing with my new camera! ;)
I found this craft from another blog and it was so easy! The owl (Hobby Lobby) was also spray painted from pink. We found the branch in our back yard and spray painted it black. The hearts were cut out from a cricut and then sewn together with thread. Super easy! Super cute!
It was really fun putting the room together and finding little things to match. I like how cheery and fun it turned out! Now all it needs is a baby girl to brighten it up even more. Can't wait!

36 weeks!

Welp folks, we made it. I am officially off medication to stop contractions and bed rest as of tomorrow morning! I am so happy I could dance. (Except I cant because I'm huge, uncomfortable and I'd probably pee my pants.) Unfortunately I caught a cold this week, and my nausea came back full force. So I imagine I'll still be on the couch most of the rest of the week. It's okay though. The thought that I COULD go walk around Target is good enough, almost. I went to labor and delivery Sunday night as per my doctor's wishes because I was contracting fairly regularly and they were ouchie! Unfortunately, they weren't doing a dang thing to my cervix and I left dilated to the 1 I was when I went in. I told Drew when we left, unless my water breaks or I am screaming bloody murder through contractions, do not let me go back. So as of now, I have in my head that she is coming (I will be induced) at 39 weeks! That's only 3 weeks people! Now that we're actually that close I kinda wanna slow down a little. Haha. Drew might kill me for saying that. I think the scare of having a very pre-term baby and being put on bed rest tricked my body into not progressing. So let's just hope it decides to dilate soon on it's own, otherwise, the induction will hopefully work it's magic. Anyway, I decided it was about time to post some pics on here so you readers don't feel deprived of cute Luke pics ;)!

Here is a 3D of baby girl at 34 weeks. Love her little nose and lips.

Me and baby girl at 33 weeks 3 days
Luke and his valentines balloon. All he could ever want :)

Having a picnic with his friends
My view most of my bed rest.
His shirt got tucked in after potty time.
He is pretty good at entertaining himself now days!
My parents took Luke for a week so I could REALLY rest, he got spoiled and had so much fun!
Isn't it funny how most of these pics are taken from the same place because I am always laying in the same spot on the couch? I think it's funny. :)

Bed Rest = Dawson's Creek + Guilt

I think the whole world already knows about my current status: bed rest. Mostly because I complain publicly on facebook. ;) But, I figured I definitely need to write down my thoughts and feelings as of now, so I can remember them later.

When I was 12 I was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia. Basically, my white cells (the things that kill disease/eat bad stuff in your body) were confused and would eat my platelets thinking they were foreign. (The blood cells that clot your blood when you have a bleed.) This led to 6 years of "treatment" which consisted of different immunizations and transfusions. Some easier than others, but eventually I had my spleen removed when I was 17, which cured me. Happy story! I am truly blessed that the splenectomy worked for me and that I don't have to deal with low platelet counts anymore. I am very grateful. But looking back on those 6 years of weekly blood draws and monthly transfusions that made me so sick, I feel like I was a pretty strong little girl. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I complained and milked the attention. I remember feeling sick, and hurt, and the physical trials that ITP gave me. BUT I don't remember feeling emotionally sad or depressed until I look back now. Sure I was sad I had to eventually quit contact sports. But I didn't mope around in my room crying.

How does this all relate to bed rest and my current situation, you ask? Well...I wish I was 12 year old Kylie going through this! Physically, it is hard since I am technically in labor. Back pain/pelvic pressure, etc. Every time baby girl has a dance party I am in tears because of her head's constant pressure on my shortened cervix. I love her so much already and will do anything to get her here safe. So I can deal with the physical pain. What I didn't expect was the emotional pain I would feel on bed rest. I'm sure anybody cooped up in a house all day would get a little storm cloud hovering over their head, but I think the hardest part is feeling guilty. The guilt I feel that I'm unable to clean the house, make dinner, but ESPECIALLY play and take care of my own little boy. I've had about 10 break downs just watching Luke play by himself on the floor thinking, "These are my last few weeks just us." "Does he understand I still love him." "How can I interact with him as best I can as I lay here?" "Should I really send him to another person's house to play tomorrow?" We have had so much support and help here from relief society, family, and friends that I am very appreciative of. Luke has a play date almost every day, and I'm so glad he gets to interact with other kids, or even adults at this point. But every time I drop him off or someone picks him up I can't help but sob for 30 mins.

Anyway, maybe I should have saved this all for my journal since it's kind of heavy and annoying. I guess what I'm trying to say is bed rest is a lot harder than I thought it would be, emotionally. I know that Drew and Luke are just fine. Drew takes care of me like nobody else could. He doesn't even complain that he has to pick up the house 15 times or do 3 loads of laundry a day. And I hope I can make it up to him some day. I know baby girl will be worth all of this, and I hope that Luke will forgive me for shoving him on other people day after day. He is my best little buddy and has grown up so much since I got pregnant. People tell me all the time, "You won't think you can love another the same, but you just do when she gets here." And it's true...I look at Luke and can't fathom loving anyone or anything like I love him. But my heart will make room for another, I'm sure! ;)

I am now 33 weeks, dilated to a 1, and my contractions are getting closer and more intense with each day. I have a full growth ultrasound tomorrow to check baby's estimated weight, my cervix length, and probably dilation again. Then we'll have an even better idea of when she is coming! I told my mom after all this scary preterm labor stuff and trying to keep her full term, she will be a week late. ;) We'll see.

Sorry for the rant, and no pictures either. :( I promise when I'm my old happy self I will be posting away like crazy. Until then, it's back to the couch with Dawson's Creek episodes. Thanks for the prayers everybody!

2012

Does anyone else feel like 2012 flew by? I'm not sure if it was all the fun we had the first half of the year then being so sick the second half, but it seems like a dream/nightmare. Unfortunately I didn't blog much so there isn't much as far as my blog goes to link back too. Which is sad because when I started this post I thought of looking through the year and seeing big things/events to blog about, and there aren't many that I blogged about, even though we did lots of fun things. So hopefully this year I can be as good as previous years.
Rather than talk about each month I will just list a few highlights of 2012!

-I started my weight loss journey in January, losing 26 lbs by April. (My goal was 32 lbs, but a little peanut started growing before planned so dieting was kinda put on the back burner! ;)

-We went to the Bahamas in early April with Drew's travel and tourism students, and Drew's brother and sister and their spouses tagged along as chaperones. It was so much fun. I want to go back every year...

-Luke turned terrible 2 and has become such a monster through out the year. His dad's nickname growing up was "Drew Monster" so I knew it was only a matter of time. But he is an adorable monster who is only monster 50% of the time, so it's okay. He is somewhat potty trained but having problems still pooping in his underwear. I'm hoping it's just from the holiday break and traveling and he'll jump back on soon.

-We celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary, I turned 24 and Drew turned 27.

-In July we went to San Diego to the Zoo and Sea World. It was such a fun family vacation and was the last good week before getting extremely sick with pregnancy!

-August is a complete blur because I seriously slept through the whole month hooked up to my zofran pump. I never thought it would end, but looking back now, it went by fast!

-September we went to Disneyland with my family and had so much fun. We thought Luke would be a little too young to remember or care, but he still talks about it and loves looking at his map. He always asks if we can "go back soon". Fortunately we already have a trip planned as chaperones of another trip for Drew's school in May! ;)

-October we found out we are expecting a little girl and we couldn't be more excited. Luke already gives his baby sister kisses and asks about her. Not sure if he really gets it, but he seems to, somewhat.

-We spent Thanksgiving with my family in St. George and it was a great weekend other than my pre-term labor starting. Since then I have been on a med to slow contractions and it's slowly progressing, but the key word there is SLOWLY. We are keeping a close eye on baby and my uterus. ;)

-Last week we returned from a week-long post-holiday get away (haha) to Washington. Kelsea (Drew's brother's wife) is also pregnant, about 15 weeks and on top of her morning sickness, she had bronchitis. So unfortunately we didn't party as hard as we usually do. ;) But we got plenty of Taco Time in....(seriously I think we ate there 5 times..because I LOVE it, especially when I'm pregnant, and we don't have one here.) and we saw Les Mis and played games and relaxed! It was a good break.

I have high hopes for 2013, as I do every year. And because I'm very blessed with all my loved ones and my job and a new little one on the way, I know it's going to be amazing!

December 20, 2012

25 weeks!

This pregnancy has been extremely different than Luke's. First of all the hyperemesis (extreme morning sickness/vomitting), then something called diastasis pubis symphysis (pressure and pain in my pubic bone/pelvis, making it hard to move while laying down or stepping up stairs..etc.), pre-term contractions starting at 23 weeks, and yesterday came two new diagnosis'. Polyhydramnios and a shortened cervix. Polyhydramnios means excess amniotic fluid which isn't too worrisome at this point. It just doesn't help with the pressure and the contractions. (And is also the reason I look 35 weeks when I'm only 25...atleast I have an excuse ;). But because I started contracting so early and have so much fluid, my cervix has begun to shorten much too soon. Before 25 weeks this isn't a problem because they can put a stitch on your cervix to keep it closed until it's time to deliver. However, at 25 weeks and beyond, it's too late for the stitch and the only option to keeping it closed is 1st, medication (which is what we are trying now), and 2nd, bed rest. Strict bed rest.

I don't know what I'll do if it comes to that so please pray that my cervix cooperates with the medication. It's basically just a pill to help stop contractions that I take every 6 hours. It was actually pretty cool to see my body in action during the ultrasound. When I wasn't contracting, my cervix was normal and long, but when a contraction would come, it would almost shorten to half the size and looked SO short.

The good news is, baby girl is doing great and looking so cute! And luckily, Drew and I both have two weeks off starting tomorrow, so we will be relaxing as much as possible before my next appointment in 2 weeks. Luckily I work for my doc, and when I'm at work I feel extra cared for because everyone knows what's going on and wants to help me avoid bed rest or pre term delivery.

Luke seems to understand where his baby sister is and has already named her. Haha, luckily it's a name we like and is in our top three so if we happen to choose it, he's in luck! But we'll see. He's almost completely potty trained with only a few accidents here and there, which we don't worry about too much. He is starting to become more terrible two-ish. His attitude has changed drastically from my sweet little man. He yells "NO!" and orders around a lot. But we are working on it.

Today is also our 5 year anniversary of getting engaged. I can't believe it's already been 5 years but I am more in love with Drew today than ever before. He is such an amazing man. He takes care of us like nobody else could and through this crazy pregnancy, has been a saint. I feel like all I do is lay on the couch and complain and the poor man just paints my nails, and massages me, and tells me he is sorry. I can't thank my Heavenly Father enough for bringing him into my life, and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have him.

Here is baby girl's precious profile!

Long legs. Don't know where she got those?!

Long toes too. Crazy.

I love this one of her nose and lips. So cute.

Here are some pics from our Christmas card this year :)

And here is a little view of what our house looks like this Christmas. There are so many more decorations because we accumulated lots from friends and sales last year. It's fun to have so many decorations! I even got my own barbie tree this year :)

We are excited to be spending Christmas here in Vegas. The day after Christmas, I have to be monitored for contractions at my office and if everything looks okay we are flying to Washington to visit Drew's grandparents and brother/sister-in-law. After Washington we plan on driving to Utah for about the 5 days left of our Christmas break. But it all depends on my appointment and how Washington goes. Cross your fingers and pray for us because I'm missing Heber lots.

Little Letters

My friend Alyse did these "mini letters" on her blog, and a couple others have done them. I think it's really cute and a good way of blogging about multiple things at once. Here are my feelings for the day in little letter form. :) Thanks for letting me copy Lys. :)

Dear Drew,
You are amazing. I don't know another human being on earth who would put up with my pregnancy whining the way you do. Rubbing my back every night, bringing me ice water or whatever I feel like eating, and telling me you love me multiple times a day are just a few of the things you do that mean more to me than you'll ever know. I'm so lucky I found you, and that I get to keep you forever!

Dear Luke,
We are on our 3rd day of potty training and you are doing SOO good! You had four accidents the first day, three yesterday, and...wait for it....ZERO today. You caught on a lot faster than I thought you would and now I'm just looking forward to you telling me you have to go and going yourself. I have to say it's been better than I thought, and I hope we both continue to have patience with one another as we continue! You are my big boy and though you still like to cuddle and give kisses, I see you changing every day. Keep going potty like a big boy, but slow down a little in other areas! ;)

Dear Heber,
I miss you like crazy. People are posting pics of all your snow and beautiful mountains. Though a lot of them complain about the cold weather and feet of snow in mid-November, my heart hurts when I see those pics because it's been FAR TOO LONG since I've seen you in person. Sure, maybe I can live without living in your snow, but your beauty and small-town feel out-weigh the cold months in my opinion. I'm hoping we get up to see you around Christmas time. Even if only for a few days. I just need a Heber fix, major.

Dear family,
I can't wait to see you all next week! It'll be fun to have every single person (well besides Gav) at the St. George house! We'll be nice and cozy and have plenty of time to talk and play. I love family time!!

Dear baby girl,
Your movements are getting stronger and stronger every day and feeling you is such an amazing thing. I remember loving it with Luke and feeling a connection with him from the very beginning, but this time is a little different because I KNOW how much I love him now. I think since my love grew and grew with him, and I saw how amazing he was when he was actually here, my love for you is more now. I know the blessing you will be when you arrive and how much your daddy, brother and I will love you. I felt one BIG kick last night that I could feel on the outside and it got me excited that you are big enough to do that. 20 weeks today! Half way there and can't wait for the next 20 til I hold you in my arms. Keep growing healthy and strong!

Dear blog,
I'm sorry for my lack in pictures and posts. I will try harder.

Love,

Kylie
